With Hillary Clinton recently announcing her bid for the 2016 Presidential Election, it’s difficult to imagine that less than 100 years ago, she wouldn’t have been able to vote for president, let alone become one.
But long before the 19th Amendment hit the U.S., suffragette Emmeline Pankhurst began the Women’s Social and Political Union in the UK. In Sarah Gavron’s new film “Suffragette,” for which you can watch the teaser above, Pankhurst is played by none other than Meryl Streep. The film also stars Carey Mulligan, Helenea Bonham Carter, Ben Wishaw and Brendan Gleeson.
Focus Features will bring “Suffragette” to U.S. theaters on October 23, in the heat of this year’s awards season. Looks like Streep is in for another Oscar Nomination.
