At the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival, much was made of who wasn’t there: The women. More than 350 films screened over 10 days, but there were few representations of women as primary actors, or as directors.

And in Indiewire’s own, wildly unscientific sampling (aka our four-day TIFF photo and video studio), we saw a similar trend. Of the 110 directors, writers, producers and actors shot by our photographer, Daniel Bergeron, only 27 were women.

The point we’re making, however, is not another mournful fist-shaking at the inequity (although it’s certainly the case), but a celebration of the extraordinary female talent that TIFF placed on display.

A gallery of our TIFF women includes the cast of Civil-War thriller “The Keeping Room;” Keira Knightley, star of  “Laggies” and “The Imitation Game;” the extraordinary duo of director Liv Ullman and her “Miss Julie,” Jessica Chastain; and the dynamo who is Julie Taymor, in TIFF for “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” and many more.
