‘Westworld’ Audience Q&A Ends Abruptly After Fan Asks to Share Script With Jonathan Nolan — Watch

Updated below. Anyone who has attended a film festival and sat through a post-screening audience Q&A knows that fan questions can be hit or miss. The audience at the “Westworld” Season 2 event at the 2018 Tribeca Film Festival on April 20 learned this fact the hard way after the audience Q&A session ended abruptly after only one question.

The first fan chosen to ask the “Westworld” panel a question was a male who proceeded to use his time with the microphone not to ask a question but to tell co-creator Jonathan Nolan that he one day hopes to get a screenplay in front of him. Nolan co-wrote the films “The Prestige,” “The Dark Knight,” “The Dark Knight Rises,” and “Interstellar” with his brother, Christopher Nolan.

“We love the show and how it’s able to keep the audience captivated,” the audience member said. “We love this show. We can’t wait to see what the rest of the season has in store for us. Just a side thing for Jonathan, my brother and I we’re huge fans of ‘Interstellar.’ You wrote that, and we’re actually aspiring screenwriters as well and that inspired us a lot. And you’ve touched something within us and we hope one day we can share our screenplay with you.”

Nolan thanked the audience member as the audience groaned. Before the fan could even continue, the moderator stepped in to end the Q&A session, noting that it was getting late and it was time to wrap up. The decision to end the fan Q&A portion of the event so suddenly was surprising given that the panel included cast members Evan Rachel Wood, James Marsden, Thandie Newton, and Jeffrey Wright. IndieWire has reached out to Tribeca for further comment.

Updated: Moderator Christopher Orr, who writes for The Atlantic, tells IndieWire that he ended the event simply because time was running out and not because of the fan’s self-serving question. Orr had been speaking with the cast and creators prior to opening up the discussion to audience questions.
