The series follows the 28-year-old Louis XIV (George Blagden), who decides to make the rebellious nobility submit by moving the court from Paris to Versailles, his father’s former hunting lodge, in order to impose his absolute power. Not long after Louis launches the construction of the palace, the nobles realize that their castle resembles a gilded prison, and as the king’s viciousness becomes more and more apparent, the plethora of secrets and the nastiness of politics reveal themselves in all their glory. Watch two exclusive clips from the series: The first features Louis upset at Queen Marie-Thérèse (Elisa Lasowski)’s betrayal and the second features Madame de Montespan (Anna Brewster) and the pregnant Louise de La Vallière (Sarah Winter) muse with Henriette (Noémie Schmidt) about how differently war would be if women were in charge.
