It’s an unlikely trio to imagine as a family unit, but Gabriel Byrne, Isabelle Huppert and Jesse Eisenberg unite beautifully in the Cannes premiere “Louder Than Bombs.”
From director Joachim Trier (“Oslo, August 31”), this emotionally-bare family drama has already generated substantial acclaim on the Croissette, including from Indiewire film critic Eric Kohn, who called it “a complex family drama done right.”
In the film, Byrne plays a New York family patriarch who has just lost his wife (Huppert). Eisenberg and “Olive Kitteridge” standout Devin Druid play his sons, and the movie examines how each of the three men come to terms with their loss in their own ways. Trier adopts a non-linear form of storytelling, exploring how memory and time informs the way family members grieve and move on.
Three clips have surfaced from the film, and each point to a naturalistic, complex and nuanced family drama. Particularly in his scenes with Huppert and Druid, Eisenberg appears to be revealing new depths as an actor, while Byrne — who’s been relatively quiet since the conclusion of his HBO series “In Treatment” — seems right in his element as a tormented and anguished widower.
