Watch: Ava DuVernay is Back With First Rousing Trailer 'Selma'

“Selma,” Paramount’s late bid to the awards race, finally has a trailer ahead of its Oscar-qualifying Christmas day release. Judging by the quality on display in the rousing promo, the early hype is warranted.

The drama marks Ava DuVernay’s first feature since winning Best Director at Sundance for “Middle of Nowhere” and re-teams “The Butler” stars David Oyelowo and Oprah Winfrey for another racially-charged film, this one about the 1965 Selma to Montgomery voting rights marches led to secure equal voting rights. Oyelowo stars as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Supporting him are Tom Wilkinson, Winfrey, Carmen Ejogo, Andre Holland (“The Knick”), Alessandro Nivola, Tim Roth, Common and “Dear White People” star Tessa Thompson.

The official description provided by Paramount is provided below:

“Selma” is the story of a movement. The film chronicles the tumultuous three-month period in 1965, when Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. led a dangerous campaign to secure equal voting rights in the face of violent opposition. The epic march from Selma to Montgomery culminated in President Johnson (Tom Wilkinson) signing the Voting Rights Act of 1965, one of the most significant victories for the civil rights movement. Director Ava DuVernay’s “Selma” tells the real story of how the revered leader and visionary Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (David Oyelowo) and his brothers and sisters in the movement prompted change that forever altered history.

“Selma” opens in select theaters December 25 before its wide opening January 9.
