FXX Renews ‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’ For Two Seasons & Orders Comedy from Tracy Morgan and ‘Sunny’ Gang

If you thought Tracy Morgan couldn’t be more rambunctious than as alter ego Tracy Jordan, just wait til you hear what’s cooking at FXX. Morgan is set to star in a comedy series from “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” creators Rob McElhenney, Charlie Day, and Glenn Howerton along with writer Luvh Rakhe. The recently created subsidiary of FX announced the development along with the renewal of “It’s Always Sunny” for two more seasons.

RCG Productions, made up of the three “Sunny” creators, signed a three-year overall deal with FX Productions that also includes three script orders and a separate pilot order. The Tracy Morgan-lead series will be sent striaght-to-series with the RCG team and Rakhe serving as executive producers and showrunners, along with Eric Tannenbaum, Kim Tannenbaum, and Nick Frenkel as EPs. The untitled comedy is scheduled to start its 10-episode run in January 2015.

“Rob McElhenney, Charlie Day and Glenn Howerton are three of the most talented comedy writers and producers in our business, not to mention very gifted actors,” Nick Grad, co-president of original programming for FX Networks and FX Productions, told Variety. “This deal is a testament to their skill, intelligence and work ethic, which combined to earn them one of the best overall deals in TV. Not bad for three guys who shot a pilot ten years ago for $200 and a few pizzas.”

Howerton also landed a script order for “Harder” with co-writer Scott Marder. “Sunny” actresses Mary Elizabeth Ellis, Artemis Pebdani, and Day teamed up for the second script order, titled “We’re Good, Thanks,” and Sarah Solemani nabbed the final order for “Blow Up Dolls” which she will star in and wrote. The pilot order will be fleshed out at a later date.

All in all, it was a massive three-year deal closed between the two production companies, and one that should result in quite a bit of off-color, unpredictable comedy for viewers. “It’s Always Sunny” has enjoyed a healthy creative resurgence of sorts over the past few seasons, making their two-year extension all the more welcome.
