Trevor Noah has been embroiled in controversy ever since he was announced as Jon Stewart’s successor on “The Daily Show.” But after his appearance last night on the Comedy Central late-night staple, the area of concern may shift from his offensive Twitter history to whether he’s the right kind of funny for the position.

Here’s the story: Noah crashed a segment about how conservatives and liberals are working together on prison reform, even though it was being handled deftly by “Daily Show” correspondent Hasan Minhaj. Even stranger, the extent of Noah’s appearance was to criticize and coach Minhaj on his interviewing skills as he spoke with the executive director of the Coalition for Public Safety — an interview, it should be noted, that seemed to be going fine up to that point.

It’s a very out-of-left-field moment for the future “Daily Show” host, one that only magnifies the question as to whether he’ll be the right person for the job.
