Oscar-nominated documentaries “The Square” (2013) and “Virunga” (2014) have made Netflix quite a powerhouse distributor for filmmakers hoping to give their non-fiction features as wide a release as possible. Based on the haunting new trailer for “What Happened, Miss Simone?“, Liz Garbus‘ portrait of recording artist and activist Nina Simone should be another success story for the online streaming platform.

The Oscar-nominated Garbus builds the narrative of Simone’s life straight from the singer’s own songs, diary entries and letters. With additional rare concert footage and interviews with Simone’s daughter, friends and collaborators, the film dives into the soul of the troubled blues singer, uncovering her devotion to empower black America and exposing her abusive personal life, her controlling managers and her own experiences being bipolar.

Stream “What Happened, Miss Simone?” on Netflix beginning June 24.
