IndieWire’s Movie Podcast: Screen Talk (Episode 119) – Why the Documentary Awards Race Is Picking Up Steam

Plus: A heated debate about Kelly Reichardt's new film, "Certain Women."

Just when you thought there were too many awards season events, here comes one more: The group behind the Critics’ Choice Awards announced this week that it would be launching the first Critics’ Choice Documentary Awards, set to take place in Brooklyn next month. The current shortlist includes a whole bunch of awards season hopefuls from the non-fiction arena across several categories. Some of these titles have been in the conversation for months; others are just creeping into it now. So what do they tell us about the awards season prospects for the documentary category as Oscar season gets into full swing?

That’s the starting point for this week’s episode of Screen Talk, in which Anne Thompson and Eric Kohn explore a number of documentaries they’ve enjoyed this year, from “Cameraperson” to “Weiner.”

But they don’t just dwell on Oscar prospects (thankfully). After last week’s heated exchange about “The Birth of a Nation” (don’t worry, they’re still friends), the pair turn to another movie they don’t quite see eye to eye on: Kelly Reichardt’s “Certain Woman,” opening in limited release this weekend. Eric’s a bigger fan than Anne, but neither one of them wants to give up ground on their opinions. They also discuss “The Accountant,” which opens in wide release today.
