‘Life’ Trailer: Jake Gyllenhaal and Ryan Reynolds Face Aliens in Sci-Fi Thriller
Is there life on Mars? What director Daniel Espinosa’s latest film, “Life,” supposes is “yes” and “also, please don’t touch it.”
The new sci-fi thriller stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Ryan Reynolds and Rebecca Ferguson as a pack of startlingly good-looking astronauts who, along with Hiroyuki Sanada, Ariyon Bakare and Olga Dihovichnaya, head off to the wilds of Mars with the express mission to find life on the red planet. From the looks of the film’s first trailer, the crew find it and almost immediately start engaging in one of the sci-fi genre’s most played out and woefully misguided tropes: playing handsie with the organism they find there.

You can probably guess how that all pans out. Yet, given that the film’s logline makes it clear that the team does find something — and that this trailer even gives a hearty glimpse of the “beautiful,” initially placid creature they discover — it seems clear that the Rhett Reese- and Paul Wernick-penned script has plenty of other stuff up its space sleeve.
Per the film’s official synopsis, “Life” will tell “the story of the six-member crew of the International Space Station that is on the cutting edge of one of the most important discoveries in human history: the first evidence of extraterrestrial life on Mars. As the crew begins to conduct research, their methods end up having unintended consequences and the life form proves more intelligent than anyone ever expected.”
