‘The Voice’ Returns: Still a Steady, Formidable Player for NBC in Season 14 — Ratings Watch

Watch out, "American Idol": the spinning chairs still have some power. Also: The Oscars increase slighty in the Live+3 TV ratings charts for the week ending March 4, 2018.

The Voice” isn’t the tremendous hit it was when it first debuted in 2011, but it still packs bite. The singing competition — known more for the interaction between its coaches than for actually discovering the next American singing idol — has settled into a healthy groove, with ratings that haven’t varied much since fall 2016. For a show now in its 14th cycle, and having undergone multiple residents of those spinning chairs, that’s remarkable.

It’s extra notable this winter as ABC attempts to revive “American Idol,” the music show that dominated on Fox in the mid-2000s, but was already on a downward slide when “The Voice” came on the scene. The arrival of this new franchise hastened “Idol’s” decline, and Fox ended the show in 2016.

Perhaps the end of “Idol” helped keep “The Voice” steady since then, as fans of music competitions found a home there. But regardless of the reason, the 14th edition of “The Voice” — with coaches Adam Levine, Blake Shelton, Kelly Clarkson, and Alicia Keys — averaged a 2.8 rating in its return on Feb. 26, a number that eventually went up to a 3.3 rating after three days’ worth of DVR and VOD usage. That’s up from the fall, and just 0.3 ratings points from last spring.

Here’s a ratings tracker of “The Voice” from the beginning:

Meanwhile, the Oscars got a slight bump from additional DVR and VOD viewing, to a 7.0 rating among adults 18-49 and 27.3 million viewers overall. The premiere of NBC’s “Good Girls” and return of CBS’ “Survivor” also made it into the Top 25.

On Xfinity’s ranker of top video on-demand shows last week, “The Walking Dead” returns to the list, thanks to its midseason premiere.
