Over the last several years, Ti West has emerged as one of the most reliable voices in horror. Films like “The House of the Devil” and “The Innkeepers” have put atmospheric chills over jump scares to startling effect, and his patience in waiting to unleash the gore has resulted in moments of pure shock and awe. West’s new feature, “In A Valley Of Violence,” may not fall in the horror genre, but the director keeps his best skills in tact while embracing the traditions of the American western.

The always-excellent Ethan Hawke plays a drifter traveling through the Old West towards Mexico with his trusty (and scene-stealing) canine companion. Hoping to quicken their trip, the pair take a shortcut through the valley town of Denton, which has become abandoned and taken over by lunatic misfits. What happens next uses the very best of West’s horror films to subvert the western genre we’ve all come to know and love. James Ransone, John Travolta and Karen Gillan co-star.

While “In A Valley Of Violence” only opened this fall, the feature is now available On Demand, and it’s just the kind of genre blast that will make your night truly wild. IndieWire Chief Film Critic Eric Kohn makes the case for watching the film this week on VOD in the video below.
