On June 21, HBO NOW released the highly anticipated second season of “True Detective,” along with launching their latest original series, “The Brink” and “Ballers.” All three series will run through July, but that’s not all they’re up to this month. Check out the films that will be coming to the new streaming platform, including recent releases like “Horrible Bosses 2” and “The Drop,” with Noomi Rapace, Tom Hardy and the late James Gandolfini, classics such as “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” and “A.I. Artificial Intelligence,” and Spanish language releases coming from Uruguay, the Dominican Republic and more. In addition, we have a list of films to watch before they are removed from streaming on July 31, as well as our own picks for what you can’t miss (in bold).

Available 7/1

Indiewire Pick: “A.I. Artificial Intelligence” (2001)

For some, this 146-minute film conceived by Stanley Kubrick and actualized by Steven Spielberg feels like it’s lost somewhere in between the two visionaries’ sensibilities; Kubrick’s darkly surreal epic scope and Spielberg’s sentimental humanity. For others, the two are a match made in heaven…or an augmented reality android laboratory. Pervaded with haunting imagery from a New York City flooded from global warming to an extreme closeup of Haley Joel Osment’s unreal eyes, the film follows a highly realistic “Mecha” (short for mechanical) boy named David (Osment), who has been designed to replace a couple’s ailing son and to love his Mommy unconditionally. We would like to know why, for a robot, David cries so much, but we still have to cry whenever he does. Stop crying Haley Joel! We will hug you forever and give you chocolate. Frances O’Connor and Jude Law costar as David’s “Mommy” and Mecha prostitute Gigolo Joe, respectively.
“The Counselor” (2013)
Dawn of the Dead” (2004)
“For Your Consideration” (2006)
“The Haunted Mansion” (2003)
“Inside Man” (2006)
“J. Edgar” (2011)
“Lone Survivor” (2013)
“My Big Fat Greek Wedding” (2002)
“Reno 911: Miami” (2007)
“Transcendence” (2014)
Available 7/4

Indiewire Pick: “Anina” (2013)

Somewhat childlike in its traditional animation but nevertheless visually breathtaking, “Anina” is director Alfredo Soderguit’s debut feature, which he based off of a popular children’s book that he illustrated. The 10-year-old titular character, Anina Yatay Salas, seems appalled at the triple palindrome (or “capicua” in Spanish) that is her name. “It’s a joke,” she exclaims over tea! When she quarrels with her nemesis Yisel in the school playground, the two girls are given black envelopes from the headmistress and are told they contain their punishments, but they mustn’t open them for an entire week. We enter Anina’s vivid imagination as she struggles with what she sees as the “weirdest punishment in the history of weird punishments,” pursues her romantic interest and questions her parents’ name-giving abilities.

“The Book of Life” (2014)

Indiewire Pick: “7 Days in Hell” (2015)

A 43-minute-long sports mockumentary, “7 Days in Hell” stars an unlikely pair: “SNL” veteran Andy Samberg and “Game of Thrones” heartthrob Kit Harington. The “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” detective faces off with the Stark bastard in a fake seven-day-long epic Wimbledon battle, complete with fake interviews and wacky fake subplots. Watch out for appearances from Will Forte, Michael Sheen, June Squibb, Lena Dunham, Fred Armisen, and real-life tennis stars Serena Williams, Chris Evert and John McEnroe.
