Hulu Acquiring Stephen King's '11/22/63' is Netflix-Style Power Play

Built around the story of a time traveler attempting to prevent the assassination of John F. Kennedy, “11/22/63” has been in development for the screen since before its publication — Jonathan Demme was initially planning to write and direct it as a film, prior to the project getting picked up by Bad Robot and WBTV.

While the news might be exciting for King fans, it’s even more exciting for Hulu. Hulu’s technically been in the independent content game for longer than Netflix — its first big original series, political comedy “Battlefield,” premiered in 2012.

But by making bigger investments in shows — and most importantly, bringing in big names like David Fincher and Kevin Spacey, Netflix has eclipsed the site — an example Amazon is emulating with its own original series from producers like Chris Carter and Jill Soloway.

Hulu has become a haven for people who don’t want cable but do want access to broadcast television, but partnering with Bad Robot and WBTV is a major leap for the company, and could be the first and most important step in Hulu playing on the same level. For, in this over-saturated sea of series, great original series are the only available life rafts.
