MoMA Bringing 35 Restored Classics to NYC

The Museum of Modern Art will present To Save and Project, its ninth annual film preservation festival with 35 restorations, all of which are having their New York premieres.

To Save and Project will open on October 14 with “The Movie Orgy,” Joe Dante’s anthology film, a montage of over four hours of filmic artifacts edited together to form a political narrative. Dante will introduce the film. Other films from the first weekend of the festival include Marcel Carné’s “Port of Shadows,” “The Honeymoon Killers” and “Hoop-La,” Clara Bow’s final film.

The festival continues with Forugh Farrokhzad’s landmark short documentary, “The House is Black,” which transforms footage of a leper colony into a visual poem. Also screening is a new print of Ken Loach’s “Kes,” “The Holy Mountain” introduced by Alejandro Jodorowsky, The Archers’ “The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp,” introduced by Martin Scorcese and Thelma Schoonmaker, and “Mikey and Nicky,” the little-seen noir starring Peter Falk and John Cassavetes and directed by Elaine May, who will introduce the film.

Another big highlight: A restoration of a hand-painted print of Georges Melies’ classic “Le Voyage dans la lune,” which has not been seen in over a century.

A tribute to George Kuchar, who passed away last month, will close the festival on November 19. His preserved films include “I, An Actress” and “Wild Night in El Reno.”
