‘Ghostbusters’ Reboot Trailer Most ‘Disliked’ In YouTube History: Is It Remake Fatigue or Sexist Rage?
Every since it was announced that “Ghostbusters” was getting a remake there have been mixed reviews about the project. Whether it was that loyal fans didn’t want to see a new reboot of their favorite film or the fact that it was a female-driven cast, discussions started to form about the film even before the first trailer dropped.
In an article by Screen Crush, the site looks into the fact that the new “Ghostbusters” trailer has been “disliked” so many times, it is already the most disliked movie trailer in YouTube history. Yes, it has more dislikes than the “Fantastic Four” and “The Ridiculous Six” trailer, and those movies were not well received. But what is interesting is that it seems that a subset of people are teaming up to hate on the movie and intentionally get it more dislikes.
The article goes on to explain that the Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy-led film is the only movie trailer that cracks the Top 100 most “disliked” videos on YouTube. Breaking down the numbers and ratio of views to dislikes, it also notes that the “majority of the videos on the list (59%) star or feature women or female characters.”
“There is a lot of hatred directed towards the new trailer, primarily because it stars four women (though the haters would have you believe misogyny is not the real driving force behind their invective) and seemingly not at all connected to its quality,” the article quips. Sony Pictures was even forced to delete offensive and sexist comments from viewers who were criticizing the stars of the film in inappropriate ways. But what was also noticed was that some haters intentionally would rally to get more dislikes. Whether this is because of the quality of the movie or the misogyny against the movie, it’s hard to tell.
But, while the trailer does have more than a half-million dislikes, it still has more viewers that didn’t have anything to say about it. For now, it looks like we’ll have to wait until July 15 when the Paul Feig-directed feature hits theaters to see if the dislikes add up.
