Netflix Picks Up Adolf Hitler Satire ‘Look Who’s Back’

At the beginning of the new year, Netflix made news by announcing ambitious plans to expand its streaming service to 130 new global territories, and its recent string of acquisitions have certainly reflected this international push. After picking up the Indian sex comedy “Brahman Nahman” and the Iranian horror film “Under the Shadow” out of Sundance, Netflix has now bought worldwide streaming rights to the German satire “Look Who’s Back.” The deal excludes Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Benelux, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Japan and Taiwan.

Based on the bestselling satirical novel by Timur Vermes, “Look Who’s Back” finds Adolf Hitler waking up in present-day Berlin with no memory of anything that happened after 1945. He is eventually mistaken for a comedy actor and lands himself a career in television, which he takes advantage of in order to mount a political comeback.

Despite its potentially controversial storyline, the film has proved to be a huge hit in its home of Germany, where it has grossed around $22 million since opening in October. The movie take inspiration from Sasha Baron Cohen’s “Borat” and “Bruno” in that it drops its iteration of Hitler, played by Oliver Masucci, into real life situations.

Netflix will begin rolling out the film on April 9.
