In August rumors circulated that the Han Solo “Star Wars” spinoff was casting a young Lando Calrissian. Now, we can officially say that Donald Glover has joined the galaxy far, far away. Lucasfilm announced that the “Atlanta” creator has been cast as Solo’s frenemy, originally played by Billy Dee Williams in “The Empire Strikes Back” and “Return of the Jedi.”
The upcoming “Star Wars” standalone movie will be directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller and stars Alden Ehrenreich as Han Solo. The film will tell the young smuggler’s backstory years before the events involving Luke, Leia, and Darth Vader. Fans will also get to see Lando in his formative years as a scoundrel on the rise in the galaxy’s underworld.
“We’re so lucky to have an artist as talented as Donald join us,” said Lord and Miller. “These are big shoes to fill, and an even bigger cape, and this one fits him perfectly, which will save us money on alterations. Also, we’d like to publicly apologize to Donald for ruining Comic-Con for him forever.”
The untitled Han Solo movie will be released in 2018.
