Watch: Ryan Gosling's 'Lost River' Trailer Promises Dreamlike Apocalyptic Drama

Ryan Gosling’s directorial debut “Lost River” may have been critically reviled at its premiere during last year’s Cannes Film Festival, but the first time filmmaker and distributor Warner Brothers aren’t letting bad press get in the way of what is shaping up to be a very confident marketing campaign.

Following up the mysterious and hypnotic first trailer from earlier this month, a new French trailer for the apocalyptic drama has landed and promises more of the film’s striking visual feast. A macabre and fantastical film set against the backdrop of a fading city, “Lost River” centers on an impoverished, struggling mother (Christina Hendricks of “Mad Men” fame) who is immersed in a dangerous mystery after her teenage son finds a secret road that leads to an underwater town.

Gosling has been vocal about how his work with Nicholas Winding Refn inspired his debut project, and the new trailer certainly proves this while also bringing to mind shades of Terrence Malick, Stanley Kubrick and David Lynch. Clearly these comparisons are based solely on a visual scale, so we’ll have to wait until the film’s release on April 12 to see just how well Gosling can extract an effective story from his dreamlike wonderland.
