In honor of the show’s final farewell, Out.com has been steadily releasing an extensive, four-part oral history on “Glee”‘s pilot this week. While the show concludes its final season tonight, the oral history provides a fitting and detailed look back on how it all began.

Creator Ryan Murphy and stars Lea Michele and Chris Colfer make appearances throughout, as do the rest of the cast members and a variety of people behind the camera that brought the show to life. The piece is organized into four parts: Casting Call, Rehearsal, On Set and The Premiere.

The history as a whole is worth your time, but Colfer revealing his trepidations over Kurt Hummel’s reception is especially noteworthy:

“It wasn’t until the day I moved to L.A. that I got the first script and saw who Kurt was. I’m from a very conservative area and at the time I was terrified to tell people I was playing a gay character — most of them didn’t find out until the show aired. It’s so ironic when I remember how scared I was — none of those fears would apply today. It was only seven years ago but I think the world was a very different place,” Colfer said.

Check out part one of the oral history here before tonight’s series finale on Fox.
