This past April, Jessica Chastain co-starred in the fantasy action adventure film “The Huntsmen: Winter’s War” and made a guest appearance on the HBO animated series “Animals,” but by the end of the year, she will take center stage in the new political thriller “Miss Sloane.” The film follows Sloane (Chastain), a political lobbyist on the brink of burnout who tries to push gun control measures in America. Its supporting cast features a murderer’s row of character actors: Mark Strong (“Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy”), Gugu Mbatha-Raw (“Beyond The Lights”), Michael Stuhlbarg (“A Serious Man”), Alison Pill (“Snowpiercer”), Jake Lacy (“Carol”), John Lithgow (“Interstellar”), and Sam Waterston (“Law & Order”).

The film is directed by John Madden. He first rose to prominence in America with his 1998 film “Shakespeare in Love,” which won the Oscar for Best Picture. Most recently, he has directed “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel” and its sequel “The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.” He has previously worked with Chastain on his 2010 film “The Debt.”

“The first moment I read the script [for “Miss Sloane”] I thought that the role belonged to Jessica,” Madden says. “She has a reputation now as an actor that’s in a class — and people expect to see a level of performance from her that’s commanding and detailed and unusual. From tremendous strength and drive on the one hand and fragility and vulnerability on the other. And the scale on this film calls for both of those two things.”
