Summer is a time for big-budget blockbusters, more compelling television, and long days out in the sun, but it’s also a time for the annual BET Awards. Last night, this year’s nominations were announced and the results are fairly compelling. The Best Actor category features Idris Elba, Michael B. Jordan, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Anthony Anderson, and Courtney Vance; the Best Actress category features Viola Davis, Gabrielle Union, Kerry Washington, Tracee Ellis Ross, and Taraji P. Henson. Meanwhile, the Best Movie nominations include Cary Fukunaga’s “Beast of No Nation,” about a young boy who becomes a child solider, “Concussion,” starring Will Smith as a Nigerian forensic pathologist who fights against the the NFL’s efforts to suppress his CTE research, “Creed,” the seventh film in the “Rocky” franchise about Adonis Creed (Michael B. Jordan), “Dope,” a Sundance teen crime drama, and finally “Straight Outta Compton,” the N.W.A. biopic.

Other nominations of note include the Youngstars Award that highlights child actors; they include Willow Smith, who released her first album “Ardipithecus” last year, Quvenzhané Wallis and Amandla Stenberg, both of whom appeared in Beyonce’s “Lemonade” video, Yara Shahidi, a cast member on the ABC sitcom “black-ish,” and Silentó, the rapper behind the hit song “Watch Me (Whip/Nae Nae).”
