In his personal new documentary “Evolution of a Criminal,” filmmaker Darius Clark Monroe chronicles his return to normalcy 10 years after going to prison for robbing a Bank of America. While coming to terms with how his actions have affected the lives of his family and friends, Monroe must also wrestle with the lives of the victims in this reflexive non-fiction feature.

At at recent screening of the film as part of the International Documentary Association’s 2014 Screening Series, Monroe sat down with Indiewire’s Ben Travers for a conversation about the filmmaker’s criminal identity, what it’s been like promoting the deeply personal film, and how the heck he got into NYU Film School with a criminal record.
