Aces! FX Renews 'Fargo' Season 3

Get ready to head back to “Fargo” (or somewhere in America’s northern states). With only four episodes left in the much-loved second season, FX has renewed the series for Season 3.

“Year two of ‘Fargo’ is an extraordinary achievement and, given Noah Hawley’s masterful storytelling, we can’t wait to see where the third, all-new version of ‘Fargo’ takes us,” Eric Schrier, FX productions president of programming, said in a statement. “Our thanks to Noah, Warren, Joel & Ethan [Coen], John [Cameron, executive producer] and our partners at MGM Television for making Fargo such a memorable and rewarding journey.”

The second season hasn’t seen the same solid overnight ratings as Season 1, but FX is one of many networks to shift priority from next-day numbers to week-long viewership — or longer. Bingeing “Fargo” may be a lot to take, given its dense metaphors and brutal murders, but that doesn’t mean people aren’t up for the challenge.

Hawley, meanwhile, is getting pretty busy. The creator, writer and occasional director of “Fargo” will also be taking on an adaptation of Kurt Vonnegut’s “Cat’s Cradle” as a limited series at FX, and he’s also signed on to bring the Marvel property “Legion” to the small screen. Considering the slight dip in quality linked to episodes not credited to the writer this season, how his deep development slate could affect his involvement with Season 3 of “Fargo” is a high priority for fans. He will clearly be the man at the top of the food chain, but his day-to-day involvement as a writer is not clear as of yet.

“Fargo” airs its seventh episode of Season 2 tonight at 10pm on FX.
