Watch: James Franco Admits He Went Acting School Longer Than He Should Have

The 21st Slamdance Film Festival wrapped up yesterday with James Franco’s “Coffee With…” event, leading into the world premiere screening of his new film “Yosemite,” written and directed by Gabrielle Demeestere. “Yosemite” chronicles the intersecting stories of three 5th grade friends living in suburban Palo Alto, as the threat of a nearby mountain lion troubles the community. The event was moderated by film critic Scott Foundas.
Franco waxed poetic about DIY filmmaking, his training as an actor, and his own teaching methods. “I went to acting school for a long time, longer than I should have,” he admits, before expressing his frustration with being dependent on other people to find work.
Franco teaches grad classes in NY and LA, and here he describes teaching students the importance of community, and “finding your people, so you’re not dependent on the gatekeepers in the insular industry.”
