Christopher Nolan Fights the Future, Will Debut ‘Interstellar’ Early on Film
Given that Christopher Nolan has been vocal about his support for film, it makes sense that his latest film, “Interstellar” will be projected on film (at least for advance showings). Paramount and Warner Bros. announced today that the film will be released two days early (starting Nov. 5) in advance showings at 225 locations across North America projected in 70mm, IMAX and 35mm. Two days later, the film will open wide in 4K and IMAX digital screenings.
Earlier this year, at the Scientific & Technical Academy Awards Nolan said that film “still represents the gold standard” for filmmaking technology.
He’s not the only critic of digital filmmaking. “As far as I’m concerned, digital projection is the death of cinema,” said Quentin Tarantino at last year’s Cannes Film Festival. “The fact that most films aren’t presented in 35mm means that the world is lost. Digital projection is just television in cinema.”
Nolan and Tarantino are perhaps two of the only filmmakers with the clout to pull off a traditional film release. Nolan shot “Interstellar” on 35mm anamorphic film and 65mm IMAX.
“To see Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar on the big screen is an unforgettable movie going experience,” said Rob Moore, Vice Chairman of Paramount Pictures, in a statement. “From IMAX to traditional film and digital projection, we are pleased that audiences will have the opportunity to see this awe-inspiring film in a wide variety of formats and we are very excited to be making the film available two days early for moviegoers.”
“Interstellar” stars Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, Bill Irwin, Ellen Burstyn, John Lithgow and Michael Caine.
