Meet the 2014 Tribeca Filmmakers #41: Courteney Cox Created Passion Project 'Before I Go'

Courteney Cox of “Friends” and “Cougar Town” is stepping to the other side of the camera for “Just Before I Go,” a drama about a man in need of making amends.

Tell us about yourself: I’m a Mom. I’ve been acting and producing for many years. I directed my first short, starring Laura Dern, in 2008 and from that moment on I knew that’s what I wanted to do. I will always look for interesting projects as an actress and am really excited about my next directing job.

Biggest challenge creating this project? This was a passion project for me, so I knew there would be challenges. For example, there was a finite amount of time to raise money and a finite amount of time to make the film with the amount of money we had raised. It gave us only 23 days to shoot. We had 41 speaking parts and 19 locations.
What camera did you shoot on? Alexa

Did you go to film school? No I didn’t, but I took an online UCLA course on filmmaking.

Did you crowdfund? I didn’t feel comfortable asking people for money.

What films have inspired you? “Ordinary People,” “Silver Linings Playbook,” “Milk,” and “The Social Network,” to name a few.

What do you have in the works? I’m currently waiting to find out whether I’m going back for my 6th Season of “Cougar Town.” My production company, Coquette, is in pre-production on a syndicated game show starring Craig Ferguson and we have scripts in development at several networks.

Indiewire invited Tribeca Film Festival directors to tell us about
their films, including what inspired them, the challenges they faced and
what they’re doing next. We’ll be publishing their responses leading up
to the 2014 festival. Go HERE to read all the entries.
