Watch: ‘Hoop Dreams’ Goes HD! (You Won’t Believe The Difference)

Fans and critics have spent the better half of the year celebrating the 20th anniversaries of such cinematic classics as “Pulp Fiction,” “The Shawkshank Redemption” and “Forrest Gump,” and it would be especially unwise to exclude Steve James‘ 1994 magnum-opus, “Hoop Dreams,” from the milestone conversation.

A sprawling chronicle of athleticism, inner-city youth and American socio-economics, James’ basketball documentary remains one of the greatest non-fiction features of all time. Kartemquin Films and SundanceNow have united to celebrate the film’s 20th anniversary with a new digital restoration that can only be streamed online as part of the SundanceNow Doc Club. The HD remastered cut is included as part of SundanceNow’s “The Essentials” program.

In a special clip promoting the new version, the viewer can see the 2014 digital restoration side-by-side with the original 1994 home video cut. Luckily, the change in clarity is the only thing that has been revised, meaning viewers will be able to see the same version of the film that turned it into a genre-defining classic in 1994.
