Ian McKellen Wants to Play Gandalf on Amazon’s TV Series: ‘He’s Over 7000 Years Old, So I’m Not Too Old’

Amazon‘s upcoming “Lord of the Rings” television series is one of the most highly anticipated projects currently in development, with the streaming giant already signing off on a multi-season commitment. While the story for the series has not been confirmed, Ian McKellen is more than eager to step back into the wizardly shoes of Gandalf.

British television personality Graham Norton recently brought up the new “Lord of the Rings” series to McKellen during an interview on his BBC Radio 2 talk show (via Digital Spy). When asked if it would be annoying to see another actor take on his iconic role, McKellen responded, “What do you mean, another Gandalf?”

“I haven’t said yes because I haven’t been asked. But are you suggesting that someone else is going to play it?” the actor continued. “Gandalf is over 7000 years old, so I’m not too old.”

While McKellen is ready to jump to television, his “Lord of the Rings” co-star Andy Serkis isn’t. The actor behind Gollum made headlines last month when he admitted to the Toronto Sun that his time with the franchise is over and that he isn’t interested in playing a part in the television series.

“I don’t think I actually would at this point in time,” Serkis said. “I feel like I’ve been part of Middle-Earth for a long period of time in my life and it was a great experience, but I can’t foresee that.”

Fortunately, McKellen has thrown his hat into the ring, should Amazon be interested in having Gandalf play a role in the new television series.
