Attention, Filmmakers: Martin Scorsese Shows How Make Film with iPad

Last year, Martin Scorsese, who graduated from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, imparted his filmmaking wisdom at the school’s commencement address. Now Apple is using his inspirational words in a commercial for the iPad (shot on the iPad2) which aired during Sunday night’s Academy Awards. The commercial highlights 15 students from the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts used iPads to write, produce, shoot, score and edit short films.

The students used iPad apps such as Garage Band, VideoGrade, Apogee MiCFinal Draft Writer and FILMIC PRO. See their films and read how they did it here. And read more about FILMIC PRO and other apps for filmmakers here.

The premise of the ad is that you don’t need fancy, expensive equipment to shoot a film — even kids can use an iPad to make a movie. But don’t think of filmmaking as following your dream: “If you’re dreaming, you’re sleeping,” intones Scorsese in the voiceover.

Meanwhile, in addition to a new generation of filmmakers using iPhones to make low-budget films, tonight’s “Modern Family” was entirely shot on iPhones and iPads. In that case, however, it wasn’t about keeping production costs low. In fact, according to BuzzFeed, the episode took more than three months to complete because of all of the special post-production work required.
