Between important interviews on hot-topic issues and dressing up dogs as Supreme Court justices, it’s becoming clear that John Oliver is, at the very least, the most helpful talk show host currently working. And “Last Week Tonight” upped its game this week by giving humanity a gift: a video that would serve as a fitting memorial for the planet Earth, should it come to an end.
Reacting to news that CNN has prepped a “doomsday video” — one that’s honestly pretty weaksauce — the “Last Week Tonight” team decided to create their own tribute to humanity, should the environment or lions finally ensure we get what’s coming to us. Calling upon the talents of television’s greatest-ever fictional president (sorry, Dennis Haysbert, but I promise you’re definitely on the list somewhere), it’s a quick romp through civilization’s highs and lows, with at least one quick detour to focus on what matters — animals in adorable outfits.
If we ever actually need this video, it’ll be a sad day, but at least we won’t be listening to a marching band blare out “Nearer Thy God to Me.” Thank you, John Oliver, for that.
“Last Week Tonight With John Oliver” airs Sunday nights on HBO.
