Fences” has released its first trailer. Denzel Washington‘s adaptation of the play by August Wilson — the actor’s third time behind the camera, following 2002’s “Antwone Fisher” and 2007’s “The Great Debaters” — follows a former baseball player from the Negro leagues in 1950s Pittsburgh. Washington and Viola Davis, both of whom won Tony Awards for their performances in the play’s 2010 revival, reprise their roles as Troy and Rose Maxson, respectively. “Fences” was first produced to great acclaim in 1983; the delay in bringing it to screen is owed in part to Wilson’s hope that a black filmmaker would direct the adaptation. Washington first expressed interest a few years ago, and clearly things worked out.

Paramount Pictures will release “Fences” on Christmas Day.
