Steven Spielberg is finally ready to tackle the superhero genre, and he’s going to do so with D.C. ComicsVariety reports the director is setting up a “Blackhawk” adaptation at Warner Bros. with his Amblin Entertainment banner. Warner Bros. was behind Spielberg’s most recent tentpole feature, “Ready Player One,” which has made over $400 million worldwide since debuting in March.

“We are so proud to be the studio behind Steven Spielberg’s latest hit, and are thrilled to be working with him again on this new action adventure,” said Toby Emmerich, chairman of Warner Bros. Pictures Group, in an official statement. “We can’t wait to see what new ground he will break in introducing ‘Blackhawk’ to movie audiences worldwide.”

The character Blackhawk is the leader of an elite group of pilots fighting in World War II. The setting will allow Spielberg to craft a superhero tentpole as a war film, a genre the director is well accustomed to thanks to the likes of “Saving Private Ryan.” David Koepp, who wrote Spielberg blockbusters “Jurassic Park,” “The Lost World: Jurassic Park,” and “War of the Worlds,” is handling screenwriting duties.

“Blackhawk” joins a growing list of Spielberg projects in development. The director is currently planning a fifth “Indiana Jones” film to shoot next, and he’s also got a “West Side Story” musical adaptation in development. According to the report, the “Blackhawk” project is being set up with Spielberg in mind to direct.
