To celebrate the 20th anniversary of Larry Clark’s landmark “Kids,” British magazine Dazed teamed up with Genius (formerly known as Rap Genius) to produce a fascinating oral history of the movie. The article contains some remarkable insights from the cast and crew, including points about how Rosario Dawson got cast after she was overheard singing on her balcony, whether or not the joint in the final party scene really had weed in it and an instance when an actor got arrested and had to be bailed out.

Those familiar with Genius will recognize their trademark highlights all over the article, which, when clicked on, offer further insight and analysis. Head over to Dazed to read the whole piece. As a tease, here’s an interesting tidbit from director Larry Clark about his introduction to skating and screenwriter Harmony Korine:

“So I was interested in [skaters] visually, and in the culture, and then these kids seem like actors to me, they’re out on the street, they’re in confrontations all the time, so they have to act, they gotta have an act. So I started hanging out with them, and I bought myself and my son a skateboard, and we started skating. I met Harmony [Korine] in the [Washington Square] park; he was a skater for six years. When I met him he was in high school, and he said he was going to stop skating and write screenplays and direct movies.”
