We’ve known it was coming for some time now, but we didn’t know exactly when until today. Trevor Noah will be taking over for Jon Stewart starting September 28. Stewart will be leaving the show he’s built into a satirical and political powerhouse on August 6, and whether fans stick with the program after his departure remains to be seen.
Noah faced some early controversy when he was announced as Stewart’s successor. A debate surfaced over the relevancy of old jokes made by the South African comedian on his Twitter feed. More recently (and less controversial), Noah appeared on “The Daily Show” in a random, unexplained and largely unfunny bit during another correspondent’s segment.
Whether the spotlight on the largely unknown host helps or hurts the tentpole Comedy Central series will be unveiled soon, but fans will have other options for late night entertainment if they so choose — including a very familiar face. September will be a busy month for late night, as Stephen Colbert starts his “Late Night” duties September 8. The former Comedy Central employee will take over for David Letterman, whose last show aired this past week.
