Today Fox announced a formal order for the six-part limited series return of “The X-Files,” starring original stars David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson. Production is set to start this summer, with the release date to be determined.

Rumors of the project began last January after remarks made at the TCA press tour, and, in interviews last February, Duchovny indicated that the deal was looking good

If “The X-Files” taught us anything, it was that rumors aren’t definitive proof. Yet even the always skeptical Scully couldn’t deny this announcement, accompanied by this statement from Fox execs Gary Newman and Dana Walden (as reported by Variety): “‘The X-Files’ was not only a seminal show for both the studio and the network, it was a worldwide phenomenon that shaped pop culture — yet remained a true gem for the legions of fans who embraced it from the beginning. Few shows on television have drawn such dedicated fans as ‘The X-Files’ and we’re ecstatic to give them the next thrilling chapter of Mulder and Scully they’ve been waiting for.”

“The X-Files” was not only a pioneer of the creator-led boom in serialized television that brought us to the current “golden age,” but also made stars  of Duchovny and Anderson as well as behind-the-scenes players like Vince Gilligan.

But will the final product actually live up to the hype? A six-part limited series is a promising notion, and hopefully one that allows for both some stand-alone storytelling as well as an overarching narrative. (As we’ve written previously, our hope is also that the show returns to its “All The Presidents’ Men”-esque conspiracies.)

“The X-Files” was always a lot of different kinds of shows at once, ranging from horror to comedy to deeply-felt drama, and all eyes will be on Chris Carter and his team as the show moves forward to see what, exactly, we’ll be getting.
