The upcoming Marvel film “Doctor Strange” has been mired in controversy for weeks now because of claims that Marvel has whitewashed a major character in the film. The Ancient One, the mentor of Doctor Strange, Earth’s protector for mystical and magical threats, is portrayed in the comics as East Asian, but the character will be played by Tilda Swinton in the film. Now, Swinton has spoke out about the whitewashing claims and explains that the character in the script “did not feature an Asian man for [her] to play.”

Though Tilda Swinton didn’t elaborate too much on the subject, she told reporters during a roundtable interview yesterday that “all will be revealed when you see the film” and that “there are very great reasons for us to feel very settled and confident with the decisions that were made.” Later, The Hollywood Reporter briefly caught up with Swinton and she reiterated that The Ancient One is “not actually an Asian character.”
This will be the first time Tilda Swinton has appeared in a Marvel film. “Doctor Strange” will be released into theaters on November 4th.
