David Lynch Finally Shares His Thoughts on the ‘Twin Peaks’ Finale, Confirms Season 4 is Possible

Just because David Lynch is finally ready to talk to the public about the "Twin Peaks" finale doesn't mean he's giving us anything close to answers.

Twin Peaks: The Return” has been over for almost two weeks now, but fans can’t stop buzzing about the game-changing two-part finale. Kyle MacLachlan and Laura Dern have already broken their silences about what they did and didn’t understand, and now it’s finally David Lynch‘s turn to do the same.

The director appeared over video at the Belgrade Culture Centre in Serbia (via Welcome To Twin Peaks), where his photo exhibition “Small Stories” is currently on display, and had one thing and one thing only to say about the finale. The final hour left viewers puzzled as it introduced some kind of alternative timeline or dimension populated with different versions of Dale Cooper, Laura Palmer, and Diane.

“What matters is what you believe happened,” Lynch said. “Many things in life just happen and we have to come to our own conclusions. You can, for example, read a book that raises a series of questions, and you want to talk to the author, but he died a hundred years ago. That’s why everything is up to you.”

Lynch’s thoughts are the most Lynchian thoughts on the finale you could think of. But at least he encourages all the fan theories and interpretations about what exactly was happening to Dale Cooper. In Lynch’s words, nobody is right or wrong in their interpretation.

As for the potential Season 4, Lynch isn’t confirming or denying anything just yet. There are currently no plans with Showtime to develop more episodes, but Lynch isn’t ruling out more “Twin Peaks” just yet. He told the crowd it’s too early to say anything and teased that a new season may entirely depend on how long it takes to develop.

“It took me four and a half years to write and film this season,” Lynch said.

Should the director want to continue the series, he’ll most likely have no problem courting stars like MacLachlan and Dern. Both actors have already gone on record saying they’d definitely return should Lynch give them a call.

“I’ll never say no to David, and I’ll never say no to Diane because now I’ve fallen in love with her,” Dern told Entertainment Weekly earlier this month. “So it would be impossible for me not to want to be part of any journey he wants to take.”

Anyone hoping for more thoughts from Lynch on the finale will have to wait a little longer. All episodes of “Twin Peaks: The Return” are now streaming on Showtime on demand.
