Film Society of Lincoln Center Announces Mountainfilm 2014 Lineup

The Film Society of Lincoln Center has announced the lineup for Mountainfilm 2014. Originally established in 1979 by Telluride rock climbers, the adventure-documentary film festival has been a traveling forum for non-fiction films of all stripes, and 2014 will be the fifth year that Mountainfilm comes to the Elinor Bunin Monroe Film Center in New York City.

Opening the festival will be Matt Livadary’s “Queens & Cowboys: A Straight Year on the Gay Rodeo,” which covers a year in the lives of extraordinary cowboys and cowgirls as they follow their dreams, no matter how wild or daunting. The Peter Sarsgaard-narrated “Valley Uprising” has been tapped as the festival’s closer. The anticipated documentary is about the epic history of climbing in Yosemite National Park and the countercultural roots of outdoor sports. It combines digitally animated archival photography, spectacular climbing footage and interviews with Yosemite greats Yvon Chouinard, Royal Robbins, Lynn Hill and more.

This year’s lineup also includes three shorts programs: Crossing Boundaries, a trio of films featuring protagonists who cross different kinds of boundaries, real or imagined; Risk & Reward, a series of shorts about people who live on the line between risk and reward; and Water, three films about finding joy in and above water.
Other titles include Douglas and Roger Kass’ songbird doc “Emptying the Skies,” the mountain adventure “The Grand Rescue” and George Knowles’ “14.c,” about a talented teenage mountain climber.

“I am excited to welcome back Mountainfilm for the fifth year in NYC,” said Programming Associate Isa Cucinotta. “Every fall we offer stories about people who are compelled to take a step outside the box when facing physical or social challenges. We celebrate their tenacity, as well as those who stood by them to capture it all on camera.”

Mountainfilm 2014 will run November 21-23. Visit the website for more information.
