‘Child’s Play’ Creator Don Mancini Throws Shade at Reboot With a Tweet That Would Make Chucky Proud

It isn’t odd that “Child’s Play” is being rebooted, given that nearly every other horror franchise has received the same treatment in recent years, but it is strange that it’s happening while the original franchise remains ongoing. Don Mancini — who created the slasher series, has written all seven films, and directed the last three — appears to agree: He responded to a first-look image of the remake with a tweet throwing shade at the whole enterprise.

“THIS IS ALL I HAVE TO SAY ON THAT SUBJECT,” he wrote alongside an image of Mariah Carey holding an “I don’t know her” sign, suggesting he has nothing to do with the reboot and doesn’t seem especially pleased with the prospect. Aubrey Plaza, Brian Tyree Henry, and Gabriel Bateman star in this new take on the Chucky mythos, which will be directed by Lars Klevberg and written by Tyler Burton Smith. Bateman plays a boy who gets a doll for his birthday, presumably unaware that it’s possessed by the spirit of a serial killer; Plaza is his mother, with Henry as the detective investigating the murders in question.

Also unlike the first seven films, this new version won’t feature the voice of Brad Dourif as Chucky. Production began on “Child’s Play” just two days ago. The most recent film in the franchise, “Cult of Chucky,” was released last year.
