‘Power Rangers’ Trailer: Everyone’s Favorite Mighty Morphin Heroes Get A Dramatic Reboot

Not much has been known about Lionsgate’s “Power Rangers” reboot aside from teases at the characters and their new costumes (plus a very wicked-looking Elizabeth Banks as the villainous Rita Repulsa), but that all changes today thanks to a brand new trailer that dropped during a panel at New York City Comic-Con. Directed by Dean Israelite, best known for sci-fi adventure “Project Almanac,” the reboot acts as an origin story, following five high school students who are chosen to become the mighty morphin heroes when a new threat against the world emerges (ahem, Ms. Repulsa).

Our five main heroes are played by “Me and Earl and the Dying Girl” breakout RJ Cyler, pop star Becky G, Dacre Montgomery, Naomi Scott, and Ludi Lin. Bryan Cranston stars as the group’s mentor, Zordon, while Bill Hader voices the robot Alpha 5. Of course Banks’ hamming it up as the villain is one of the film’s main attractions, and it looks like she’s having a complete blast embracing her dark side for the big screen.

The trailer also suggests Cranston’s previous statements that the reboot would be akin to “The Dark Knight” weren’t completely baseless. It’s not that the film looks incredibly dark and violent, but more that, like Nolan’s “Batman” trilogy, it’s a serious, grounded take on what in the past has been more cartoonish. Whether fans will embrace this more serious take on the material remains to be seen.

“Power Rangers” opens in theaters nationwide on March 25, 2017. Watch the debut trailer below.
