Film Festival Roundup: Fantasia Announces Full Lineup, Rooftop Films Partners With IDFA And More

Keep up with the always-hopping film festival world with our weekly Film Festival Roundup column.
Don't Breathe
A surprise box office hit that basically came out of nowhere when it premiered earlier this year, Fede Alvarez’s home invasion thriller follows up his deranged 2013 “Evil Dead” remake to prove he’s the real deal. The film finds a trio of reckless teens attempting to rob a blind man (Stephen Lang, terrifying) as they wind up trapped in his lair for the night. Equal parts “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” and “High Tension,” this elegant and surprisingly fast-paced blend of horror and suspense overcomes some of its more ridiculous ingredients thanks to endless invention. Running and fighting a buff man and his growling dog, the survivors face the ultimate grotesque showdown in his gnarly basement. And just when you think they’re in the clear…”Don’t Breathe” will leave you gasping for air. —EK Availability: iTunes, DVD and other digital platforms.

– The Margaret Mead Film Festival will be celebrating its fortieth anniversary this year from October 13-16 at the American Museum of Natural History. With this year’s theme “Re:Frame,” the Margaret Mead Film Festival invites viewers to probe their own perspectives and to celebrate stories and art forms that offer us opportunities to see the world anew. In this way, the festival honors the legacy of Margaret Mead, whose groundbreaking approach to anthropology revealed how our histories, values, and points of view inevitably frame our encounters with other cultures and communities. You can find out more at the official Margaret Mead Film Festival website.
