Wes Anderson‘s long-time cinematographer Robert Yeoman finally earned his first Oscar nomination for lensing “The Grand Budapest Hotel” earlier this year. But he’s long been known as a top-notch DP, earning an Independent Spirit Award for his work with Gus Van Sant on “Drugstore Cowboy” back in 1990.

Despite Anderson’s elaborate and ornate visual template, Yeoman sticks to shooting on film as his preferred method, explaining that “it brings everyone’s attention span to exactly what’s going on in front of the camera.”

In an interview with Yeoman posted below, the acclaimed cinematographer adds detail on the vibrant energy, visual authenticity and enforced efficiency that comes with using film. Check out what he had to say on that and more by watching the full clip:
