‘Vinyl’ Canceled: HBO Makes Its Music-Biz Drama a One-Hit Wonder

There will be no second album.

It seems that HBO‘s music-biz drama was a one-hit wonder. The network has canceled “Vinyl” after a disappointing first season that saw showrunner Terence Winter (previously of “Boardwalk Empire” and “The Sopranos,” also for HBO) forced out of the band in April. Disappointing ratings plagued the series, which stars Bobby Cannavale as a struggling record executive in the 1970s, from its inception.

“After careful consideration, we have decided not to proceed with a second season of ‘Vinyl’,” said HBO in a statement. “Obviously, this was not an easy decision. We have enormous respect for the creative team and cast for their hard work and passion on this project.” HBO is said to have spent $100 million on the 10-episode first season of the show, nearly a third of which went to the two-hour series premiere.

The news is a reversal of a February announcement that “Vinyl” had already been renewed for a second season. Mick Jagger, Martin Scorsese and Rich Cohen served alongside Winter as executive producers on the drama, which co-starred Olivia Wilde and Ray Romano.
