Warner Bros. has nabbed Oscar-winning composer Hans Zimmer to score its highly anticipated “Wonder Woman 1984,” according to an announcement made on the composer’s site. The sequel to 2017’s record-breaking superhero hit, “Wonder Woman,” the follow-up sees the return of director Patty Jenkins (“Monster”), and stars Gal Gadot and Chris Pine. Jumping in time to take place during the Cold War, “Wonder Woman 1984” also adds Kristen Wiig to the franchise as the villainness Cheetah.

Zimmer previously hinted at a retirement from superhero movies in 2016, bowing out of scoring the Ben Affleck-starring “Batman” because he “didn’t feel the pain” that he felt in Christian Bale’s performance.

Zimmer will take over for “The Crown” composer Rupert Gregson-Williams, who scored the first film. His ties with the character can be traced back to “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,” in which he wrote the original “Wonder Woman” theme. Warner Bros. can’t take full credit for getting Zimmer out of retirement, however; he is also scoring 2019’s “X-Men: Dark Phoenix,” starring Jennifer Lawrence and Jessica Chastain. More imminently, his music can be heard in Steve McQueen’s upcoming “Widows.” Zimmer will also be shepherding Disney’s live-action “The Lion King,” for which he penned the original score.
