Watch: Netflix Series 'Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt' from Tina Fey Debuts '30 Rock'-esque First Trailer

After getting our first glimpse at “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt,” the new Netflix comedy from Tina Fey and Robert Carlock, it’s hard to imagine it on NBC. The Peacock was originally supposed to be home to the new series about a young woman who is freed from an underground cult and decides to make it work in New York City, but a late deal moved the series to a more binge-friendly platform.

It already feels like the right move, even with so little evidence. To say nothing of the bizarre premise, “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” feels very much like Tina Fey’s last sitcom, “30 Rock.” With rapid fire jokes (including the blink-and-you’ll-miss-it stab at racially-biased news coverage), a romantically incompetent lead, and Jane “I’ll Always Be Jenna” Krakowski herself, “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” looks to fill the void that fans of Jack and Liz have felt since the show left the airwaves in 2013. But while that show found nothing but success critically, it never drew in the numbers for a network then desperate for ratings.

Hence Netflix. Though we’ll never know how many more fans “30 Rock” obtained because of its availability on the streaming service, we do know more niche programming has a better chance to thrive here than it does on broadcast television (just look at “Orange is the New Black” or “BoJack Horseman” for proof). “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” premieres Friday March 6. We already can’t wait.
