Watch: Grammy-Winning Rhymefest Gets Doc Treatment in Exclusive ‘In My Father’s House’ Clip

Musician and activist Che “Rhymefest” Smith is the subject of the upcoming documentary “In My Father’s House,” which is set set to premiere in April at the Tribeca Film Festival. Smith recently co-wrote the Academy Award-winning song “Glory” from “Selma.”

From Emmy-nominated directors Ricki Stern and Annie Sundberg (“Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work”), the upcoming documentary spotlights themes of fatherhood and gang violence, as Smith tries to reunite with his estranged father and strengthen the bonds within his own young family.

In an exclusive clip (posted above), Smith reunites with his father and expresses the great deal of pain that’s coming with being estranged for so long. Directors Stern and Sundberg said about the clip: 

“This scene stands out to us. It is the first moment of confrontation in the film. Sometimes it’s the child who has to be the responsible adult. In this case, it happens to be a guy, a hip-hop star, who has written powerful songs – songs that have won Grammy, Golden Globe and Academy Awards, but here he is, Rhymefest, at Moon’s diner with his father who was absent from his life for 25 years. None of his success seems to matter in this moment because, in this vulnerable moment, he is exposing himself as a hurt son searching for his lost dad. That universal longing of identity and legacy seems identifiable to all of us. Ultimately, this scene defines the film’s challenge – will drinking be a hurdle to getting off the streets and establishing a relationship between a son and his father?”
