Music Box Films Acquires Arab Spring Doc 'We Are The Giant'

Submarine announced earlier today at the Toronto International Film Festival that it has sold all U.S. rights (minus TV broadcast rights) to Greg Barker’s feature documentary “We Are The Giant” to Music Box Films. The distributor acquired the similarly political “The Green Prince” at Sundance this past January.

“We Are The Giant,” a Passion Pictures and Motto Pictures Production, takes a gripping look at the Arab Spring by following the stories of prominent revolutionaries across three different countries. By mixing raw footage of protestors taking to the streets with unflinching testimonial interviews, the film unmasks what it means to take part in a collective action that has the potential to unseat dictators and bring previously undreamed-of freedoms to a long-suffering people.

Ironically, the documentary’s acquisition comes just as one of its leading subjects is imprisoned. Barker issued the following statement in response to the news: “This week one of our film’s main characters, Maryam al-Kawaja of Bahrain and Denmark — who drew standing ovations at Sundance for her brave, unwavering commitment to non-violence – was arrested on spurious, trumped up charges by her own government. And so I’m proud that this same week we can announce our partnership with Music Box, who are as committed as me and our entire production team to bringing these extraordinary, inspiring stories to American audiences, especially now when the worst of humanity is getting so much attention.”
