On Sunday, September 18, Julia Louis-Dreyfus won the 2016 Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for her portrayal of Selina Meyer on “Veep.”

The award was presented to the actress by Keegan-Michael Key at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.

In her speech, Dreyfus joked about her show in the context of modern politics. “I’d also like to take this opportunity to personally apologize for the current political climate. I think that ‘Veep’ has torn down the wall between comedy and politics. Our show started out as a political satire but it now feels like a sobering documentary. So I soberly promise to rebuild that wall, and make Mexico pay for it.”

Dreyfus also dedicated the award to her father who died this past Friday, saying that “his opinion was the one that really mattered.”

This is Louis-Dreyfus’ 22nd nomination and eighth win.
